VIEWING | Randy Rides Alone (1934)

Meld together

• deceptive quietude
• obvious miniature
• slightly sped up movement
• deceptive musical gaiety
• unprecedented panning shot
• 20-second static shot of a player piano
• portrait with real eyes/eye
• wanted poster portrait, eyeless
• 26- or 27-year-old John Wayne
• the future director of “Chained for Life”

and what you get is this unforgettable opening sequence that will make a B-Western believer out of anyone.

Wow! What an amazing scene.

I love the sweet and sour piano playing. Did you ever go to Edaville Railroad? It had one of those pianos.
